Why is the shop called Win Win Plants?

The owners of the shop, after taking Environmental Studies courses at UCSB, started to lose that connection with nature. So what started with one plant, eventually turned into 10, 20, 30, eventually reaching over 50 plants. Then we pondered? What if we can open our own plant shop, and how can we make it unique. And so the idea came...

A plant shop that benefits you as the consumer, people around you, people far from you, and even the planet. While also spreading awareness on sustainability, and environmentalism. A community hub for all things nature.

It's a win-win situation, but how?

Win Win?: About

Environmental Awareness

Who knew plant shops weren't entirely environmental conscious?

Sadly the indoor plant scene has gotten out of hand in terms of having sustainable practice. There are many controversial issues that plant shops have developed in terms of being environmentally harmful. Some examples include the use of Sprinkler system waterings, the use of unsustainable peat moss, shipping plants far with online shopping, buying from wholesale nurseries far away, instilling a materialistic mindset to plant shopping, overcharging plants, and a lack of native plant life.

So what makes us different?

  • Hand watering plants

  • Promoting plants that can thrive without Peat Moss

  • Promoting Plants not only for aesthetics but for the benefit of you and the local ecology. We don't need rare plants or rare variegations to enjoy nature indoors.

  • Education in-store with lectures on topics pertaining to the environment, and educating the buyer about the plant they are going to purchase.

  • Recycle program in Shop

  • Local Nursery Suppliers

  • No Market Value Plant Selling

  • No online shopping, sorry!

  • Repotting Services

  • Supporting environmental charities

Where do we get our plants? Currently, the outdoor plants available at our shop come from Monrovia. A grower that prides itself on its recycled water system, a grower that uses biocontrols for bug control, a grower that keeps tabs on pesticide use and grower practices at other Monrovia nurseries, and better yet a grower that provides native plants for the California Region. This grower was also picked for its close proximity to the shop, growing in the San Joaquin Valley.

House Plant Wholesale is our indoor plant supplier, based in Southern California and Southern Florida, they offer local indoor plants. Based in San Marcos, although a bit far, is the closest in terms of indoor plant growers.

Community

Events that promote community building!

Make sure to check the events page as there is usually something to do every month. Win-Win? You get to meet new people and develop more friends. Developing our local community. The goal of Win-Win is to get our community and spread environmental awareness/plant appreciation.

Community events can also bring people in who have never thought about owning plants, helping further grow the plant community locally.

Charity Events

Trying something different as a plant shop.

As an effort to promote giving, when possible the plant shop will offer Non-profit sales once a month. Usually to charities that promote environmentally-focused change. Donations that focus on environmental justice, sustainable practice promotion, human justice, and even green energy charities. Whichever the mood calls for that month, research will be done to make sure that we donate to 4-star, Charity Navigator charities.

Love the music played in the shop but want a switch? Pay a buck to change the song and we will donate that money to the upcoming charity drive. Another way we can squeeze more money back into the world.

Free plants randomly throughout the week, so make sure you come along and maybe you'll find an extra buddy. Heck, offer it to your friends, spread the love.

Physical Health

Help Your Physiological health at home while supporting a local Business!

Although the studies on the effectiveness of plant's cleaning indoor air quality aren't thoroughly researched just yet, there is still new research appearing to hone in on the science of cleaner air with plants. There are studies that explain that plants that are able to flourish in indoor conditions (plants that grow and thrive under low and medium lights) are plants most capable of removing air pollutants. Owning a Peace Lily in a medium light room, compared to a White Birds of Paradise in a medium light room, will filter air pollutants more efficiently because it is living in the plant's appropriate condition. So get ready for snake plants and maybe some ferns to make their presence known in your house.

Mental Health

An outlet for stress and relaxation, while supporting small buisness!

Again, with the physiological benefits of plants. The Mental Health side of plant care, is also in need of more research. But studies have shown already that introducing plants to an indoor setting, particularly in an office setting, can help with visual fatigue and mental stress. At home on the other hand, it offers a plant parent relationship, where you see said plant grow and thrive under your hands. And if it sadly dies, don't worry there's a plant that is more catered to you some where in our shop.
